BACKGROUND

“Digital literacy is the ability to access, manage, understand, integrate, communicate, evaluate and create information safely and appropriately through digital technologies for employment, decent jobs, and entrepreneurship,”

 UNESCO

“About 87% of African business leaders identify digital skills development as a priority area in need of further investment. In 2022, African countries scored between 1.8 and 5 on the Digital Skills Gap Index, which is below the global average of 6. Of the world’s 20 countries with the weakest digital skills, 12 are in Africa, and only 11% of Africa’s tertiary education graduates have formal digital training,”

  Boston Consulting Group

“Nearly 65% of individuals recruited for jobs at the African companies surveyed in 2019 require at least a basic level of digital skills. By 2030, Africa will encompass about 625 million people who require digital skills. More than 50% of all jobs in Kenya and 35-45% of jobs in Rwanda, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire, for example, are expected to require digital skills supported by strong ICT infrastructure and supportive policy towards digital literacy,”

IFC & WB, 2019

“The AU will drive a common framework of teachers’ digital skills in the continent. The African Teachers’ Digital Skills and Certification Framework will establish, disseminate and encourage the use of a region-wide competency framework for delivering digital skills for pre-service teachers and through peer learning and teachers collaboration workshops for in-service teachers … the potential integration of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence in teaching and learning,”

Digital Education Strategy & Implementation Plan, (AU, 2023-2028)
